Birds watching sites near Kathmandu “GODAWARI BIRDS”: Located on the southern border of the valley within a short distance. Godawari forest is the best bird watching spot in Kathmandu valley.

It is the home of some 300 species of birds such as Spiny Babbler (endemic species), many rare, endangered and globally threatened species. And hence this place is very popular for ornithologists and birdwatchers.

Some birds that are important highlights of this area are Himalayan Cutia, Dark-sided Laughingthrush, Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush, Blue-napped Pita and Griffon vultures etc. For the best result of bird watching two days of time is highly recommended. Over hundred species of birds can be recorded easily on a good day.

Tour program

Day Birding Godawari: 5-6 hours (approx)

Travel to Godawari, very early in the morning for about an hour and start exploring the lower parts of Phulchauki. Mainly Godawari for many species of birds.

And return back to Kathmandu in the afternoon

2 Days of birding can be arranged, to visit Phulchauki mountain. That has many birds that of higher land and habitat and view of mountains and surrounding area also spectacular from there.

A day normally is 5-6 hours but can be shorter or stretched longer as per required and how many birds were seen on the walk.

Birds watching in Godawari and Phulchauki Hill is done beside the road; as it’s easy to see and hear the birds without attempting into the forest. The road is mainly used by the officials; located at the top and normally pilgrims or the nature lovers who visit the Hill. We can get to know about many endangered species of many rarely found birds.

The lower section is not so good for the bird as it is not so greenery but the upper part of the hill is great for the bird that has some rocky path to walk while birding down the hill.

Things to bring along while visit

A pair of binoculars, a bird guide- “Birds of Nepal”, Pen and Notebook,  drinking water, dry snacks, etc.

Tour  Departure

This tour can be arranged any day. But its best to avoid the Saturday because it is famous for picnic spot too. It will be little disturbed to the birds as well as birdwatcher but if that is the other days it’s okay to visit.
